NOTD - Corset nails

Simple transfers can transform boring nails :)

What to buy with those Boots No7 Vouchers!

I've lost count of the amount of £5 off No7 vouchers I've been given. They seem to run this promotion every couple of months, and I think this is the reason behind No7's not-quite-high-street-not-quite-high-end prices. To be completely honest, I don't think the products are worth their retail prices, but with the £5 off vouchers they're more on the mark. So here's a quick summary of what I've used them on in the past, and some freebies you could get!

Are you taking the leap?

It has come to that time once again, Leap Day, where women up and down the country will be analysing their relationships. Even if there is no intention of proposing, there is no doubt that a lot of us have considered it in some vague fashion and there is that little question going around in our heads ‘would he say yes?’ There is also, of course, the self evaluation about whether you are actually ready to take that big step yourself anytime soon, that seems to arise whenever engagements become a major theme of the day (upon hearing of a friend’s engagement, on Valentine’s Day, or even at Christmas, for example, as well as on February 29th).

Boston Cream Pie

Boston Cream Pie:  Is it a pie? Is it a cake? Either way it is a delicious cake-y custard-y chocolate-y dessert that I highly recommend trying!
I recently had my parents over for dinner, and I know it is my Dad’s favourite. As I like being adventurous in the kitchen, I figured I would give it a try.
It started the day before the dinner: I made the base cake, and the vanilla pastry cream and left them to set overnight. In the morning, the pastry cream needed to be cut with a knife, not the consistency it needed to be. After a few recipe modifications I made more and it set beautifully.  After assembling the cake I made the chocolate ganache (for the first time ever!) and it turned out exactly as it was supposed to (cue small happy dance around the kitchen)!
It got rave reviews and it is something I am definitely going to make again.

Macarons. By no means Macaroons.

When I first attempted a Macaron the result was a puffy meringuey ball, which refused point-blank to lift from the parchment paper. And those 'feet' that everyone was banging on about? Non-existent. I stuck two together with vanilla frosting (my teeth nearly fell out just looking at them) and tried to sell them at a farmer's market I was attending in Kendal. I almost force-fed them to prospective customers, after they wouldn't even accept free tasters.

They were pretty awful, as I remember.

Introducing Norway: Bergen

Norway isn’t usually the first choice for most British tourists and international students. Once you get past the popular America/Australia and various warm beachy countries on the list, it’s easy to forget that there is a largely untrodden hidden treasure less than a three hour flight away. My experiences living in Norway have been many, and whereas I can recommend various nature trails and mountain ranges, lakes and fjords, small towns and fishing villages, I’ll mostly describe a few of the cities and towns here that a lot of people back home might be oblivious to. So without further ado, I’ll begin with my lovely current city of residence – Bergen.

Oscars 2012: Fashion

I look forward to the Oscars every year. Am I a film fan? No. Instead, my interests lie in what the celebrities turn up wearing. I like to judge them thoroughly, everything from the colour they choose, to the designer, to the hair and make up they team the dress with. I even like to make predictions as to which designers will be heavily featured, weeks before the event is even shown (this year I decided Oscar de la Renta would be popular; apparently I was wrong). Here are my personal opinions on who looked fantastic, and who seriously needs to get themselves a better stylist.

Oscars 2012: Awards

Last night my girlfriend and I spent three plus hours enjoying the Oscar Show. Having seen most of the nominated films and having our own favourites, we were thoroughly engrossed in the proceedings.

I thought the use of various vignettes throughout the show added significant interest. The host Billy Crystal while playing it safely, was interesting and appropriate. As for the outcomes, I was not really surprised. Having recently seen "The Artist", its win for best picture was not unexpected. I couldn't really disagree, although I think I enjoyed "The Help" more as it was such an accurate portrayal of a time I grew up in although not as aware of the actual specifics of the life and situation of the maids in a southern U.S. city.

‘Don’t Get Mad, Get Even’

Having never really felt the need for revenge before, this weekend left me with a burning desire to ‘get my own back’. I had never felt so humiliated in my life. And here I was in the ‘big smoke’ a northern girl with no idea how to use the ticket machine, let alone the tube. With the help of the iPhone, a few girls and some nice old woman on the train I managed it. Arriving at Euston 4 hours earlier than planned and close to tears, I decided a bit of retail therapy was necessary and went a bit mad in Accessorize. So here I was on the train home, newly sparkled up and on my way home from the weekend of hell, it was this journey that made me re-think my approach to being ‘the nice girl.’ So here it comes, the inner bitch and a little bit of relief….
